Q. What is the most popular pet in the USA?
A. It's sort of a toss-up between cats and dogs. According to the Infoplease Almanac, in
2007 more cats that dogs were claimed as household pets (88.3 to 74.8 million). However,
more households owned dogs than owned cats (44.8 to 38.4 million). So evidently cat
owners tend to have more cats than dog owners have dogs.
Q. Why is mayday used as a distress call?
A. The term mayday comes from the French phrase m'aider, which means "help me."
When adopted into English, the spelling was Anglicized to mayday because the French term is pronounced almost the same way.
